Deandra and Mac Open Mac’s Tavern…

Here in (actually) sunny Phoenix, AZ, we don’t see too much of Philadelphia while we’re out and about. However, the popular FX show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has done a fantastic job at attracting attention to this far-away city. To make the show even more enticing, the actors who play two of the leading characters, Mac and Deandra, are married, and recently had their first baby on September 1st. To further their life changes, “Mac”, Rob McElhenney, recently funded the opening of a new Philadelphia bar, called “Mac’s Tavern”. McElhenney says he didn’t want it to be too “Hollywood”, but there are a few menu items named after the show, and it is not uncommon to see Danny DeVito enjoying his wings and beer. So, it may be 2,340 miles away, but next time you’re in Philly, check out Mac’s Tavern! We’re confident they’ve got good beer and good food to match!

On drinkingbeer.net, there is an article on 10 reasons why beer is good for you. These
are actually true facts! Besides, with the already long list of why beer is amazing, how can you
NOT crack one open after this? We picked a few of our favorites from the list to share.
Let’s all drink to good health!

- Beer is a Stress Reducer
Alcohol in general has been shown to reduce stress. Many cultures use alcohol
to “calm the nerves”.

- Beer is Heart-Healthy
A study was conducted from 1982 – 1996 on the elderly. It was found that those who
drank at least 1.5 per day had a 20-50 percent less chance of having heart failure.

- Beer Reduces Toxins in the Liver
Alcohol expands the small blood vessels in the liver. This speeds up metabolism
so it can help clean all the toxins out of the liver. Here you thought you were destroying
your liver when you went out on the weekends . . .

- Beer Helps Insomnia
Lactoflavin and nicotinic acid, both present in beer, can promote sleep. Also, hops
are a natural sedative. However, best not to over do it cause the next morning may not be
so fun.

Planning a trip? We’re sure you won’t forget to consider your alcohol availability. Luckily, Trip Base has prepared some pointers. They’ve created a very educational article, Top 10 Beer Capitals of Europe, and we thought we’d pass along their tips. We liked this article in particular, because it didn’t simply name the European capitals everyone knows and plans to go to anyways. It picked a few that the biggest travel buffs have never heard of, because they truly are a beer capital. Check out the list:

Cans vs. Bottles

Several weeks back, a friend and I had the duty (privilege, or honor perhaps?) of purchasing some beer for a get together. Now, we were well aware that this was no small responsibility. We assessed all variables carefully in order to come to the best possible option. However, after selecting the best brewer, and style, we came to a crossroads. Do we go with the bottle, or the can? For some reason, I was intrigued by the idea of the can… much to my friend’s dismay. After much dispute, I finally got my way (I can be very persuasive…) and we walked out of the local grocer arms full of canned beer. Even though I got my way, I was very intrigued by my friend’s vehement disapproval, and kept the issue at the back of my mind.

Today, when perusing the internet, I stumbled upon a website called Serious Eats. With such a name, they have to be trustworthy, right? Well, not that I’m one to say “I Told Ya So!”, but it turns out… I did! They too agree with my choice of canned beer, and even put very logical reasons behind it.

Compact. Beers stack well in the fridge, leaving plenty of room for other necessities.
Quick to cool. Put a warm bottle of beer in the fridge next to a warm can. We promise the can will be drinkable first.
Light. The heavy nature of bottles makes them much less transportable.
Safe. Most pool areas and public outdoor areas do not allow glass (and for good reason) but cans are always welcome!

So there you have it. According to SeriousEats.com and me, cans are the better alternative. Which do you prefer?

Well we’ve cited them before and we just can’t say it enough, Modern Drunkard Magazine is an excellent resource if you are ever looking for a reference about alcohol, a new kind of alcohol, or a reason to drink alcohol. Especially that last one. The most recent article we’ve fallen in love with is 40 Rock-Solid Reasons to Get Drunk Tonight. We couldn’t resist mentioning a few of our favorites. Remember though, the point of this is not to just steal someone’s funny writing. It is to remind you of rock-solid reasons to get drunk tonight! Disclaimer: some of these reasons are rather inappropriate, and do not reflect the opinions of Pool Pong or any of its employees! (…or do they?)

The brewing industry alone employs 1.7 million people and that’s a lot of mouths to feed.
This is the one and only night your soul mate will wander into the bar. Seriously.
It’s far better to have a good time you won’t remember than a dull one you will.

Let’s be real though. You’re on a blog of a company that makes floating beer pong tables (awesome, we know). Do you really need a reason to drink tonight? Quit pretending you do, and go make all your (wildest?!) dreams come true. We fully support you in your decision.

Nine Alternative Uses for Beer

Alright, I found this one at StrangeMilitary.com, and figured that it is worth sharing because it is not only entertaining, but also very useful! I know the obvious use of beer is to drink it, and I’m sure it is challenging to imagine why you’d need a different use, but in case you’ve got some beer that is about to go bad, check out this list.

1. Marinate Meat in it

2. Help Grass Grow

3. Kill Slugs and Snails

5. Calm an Upset Stomach

Think Your Drinking Story Is Cool…?

Think again! MadConomist.com published Five Drinking Stories That Put Yours To Shame, and we must say, they prove their point. We felt they did such a good job, that it was necessary to share with all our loyal followers. And listen, don’t be offended. We understand that it was really awesome when you defeated your competing Pool Pong team, disabling them from sinking any cups. It was cool when we did it too. But apparently history has got us beat.

1. Admiral Edward Russell

I’m thinking that maybe having Admiral as your title makes you automatically cool. I don’t have much evidence to support this, but it is definitely true in the case of Admiral Edward Russell. Russell is responsible for creating history’s largest cocktail. Housed in a garden fountain, this cocktail was created with, according to the article, “250 gallons of brandy, 125 gallons of Malaga wine, 1,400 pounds of sugar, 2,500 lemons, 20 gallons of lime juice, and 5 pounds of nutmeg”. Nice. Not only did they hire people in boats to row around serving the drink, but they had to hire many people… so that none got too intoxicated from remaining in the serum.

2. Meux’s Horse Shoe Brewery

This London brewery, in an attempt to beat out a rival, created a beer vat 22 feet tall, and 60 feet in diameter. Before filling it, they actually served 200 people dinner right inside the vat, in celebration of its creation. Unfortunately, when they filled it with 4,000 barrels of beer, they learned that it was faulty. This caused the vat to erupt, consequently breaking other nearby vats, creating a commotion that was heard five miles away. 1.3 million gallons of beer poured down the street, injuring many, which led to riots, building cave-ins, and excessive amounts of alcohol consumption.

3. Manhattan

Many have heard that Manhattan was once referred to as “the high island”, but it is not commonly known why. Well, when the English explorer Henry Hudson set off to find new land, he encountered the Delaware Indian tribe. In order to create peace, Hudson shared his brandy with the chief. Caught off guard by its effects, the Indian chief passed out, only to wake the next day and request more for his tribe. Once they all had enjoyed the liquor, they soon referred to the island as Manahachtanienk — or, translated, “The High Island.”

4. Admiral Horatio Nelson

So, you’re probably thinking that my previously mentioned “only fact I have about Admiral-coolness” was a lie. Well, it wasn’t. While this one is indirectly about an Admiral, he’s not that cool. In fact, in the story, he is dead. His second-in-command stored his body in rum for preservation. However in order to do this, he had to halt all liquor rations… which apparently upset some of the crew. Clearly, when the Admiral’s body was found upon arrival in a dry vat, all were disgusted to learn that the crew had drank the rum surrounding the Admiral’s body.

5. Drunk Elephants

What a way to end the list. Apparently, elephants are large (no pun intended) fans of alcohol. An Indian army in the jungle of Bagdogra has had all its defenses destroyed by elephants who apparently desperately wanted some rum. Apparently, they broke the rum bottles by crushing the bottom with their trunks, and pouring the substance down their throats. Smart animals, if you ask us.
